Legends connect the temple's origin to the sage Vyaghrapada and an encounter with Lord Shiva. The temple is one of the largest in Kerala, featuring a spacious courtyard, four gopurams (entrance towers), and a Shiva Lingam believed to be from the Treta Yuga.

According to legend, Saint Vyaghrapada saw Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati here, leading to the place being called Vyaghrapadapuram, which later became Vaikom.

The temple's Shiva Lingam is believed to be one of the oldest, from the Treta Yuga, one of the four ages of humankind.
